Thanks to all the Anteaters out there who voted to keep UC Irvine’s newspaper, The New University, alive! Measure U passed with flying colors. Much more reporting to come!
Save UC Irvine’s newspaper, The New University! The paper, like everyone else in the publishing business, has felt the pressure of neglect and lack of funds. If Measure U does not pass this voting term, the paper will have enough money for about another year of reporting and then will be forced to shut down. By voting yes on Measure U, a mere $.99 will be tacked onto every student’s tuition per quarter for the next 5 years. You pay more for your daily cup of coffee or a pack of gum. Don’t let UC Irvine be the only UC campus without a hardcopy newspaper. Please remember to vote YES on Measure U this week at asuci.uci.edu/elections.
The Last Handwritten Newspaper Still in Print?
The earliest forms of newspaper were handwritten and now ‘The Musalman‘ probably is the last handwritten newspaper in the world. This Urdu language newspaper was established in 1927 by Chenab Syed Asmadullah Sahi and has been published daily in the Chennai city of India ever since.

Start Your Own Online Newspaper

What will the big guys say?!
Tired of the cut-throat journalism industry? No problem! Just start your own newspaper at paper.li and get the news out there. This is really interesting and is a real sign of the times. Check out paper.li to start your own online newspaper now!
Aside from the little advertisement, I actually don’t know how to feel about this. This is excellent for people that know what they’re doing like The Future Journalism Project but what about those who aren’t trained journalists? With people blogging left and right and Instagram making people think they are photojournalists, how will citizen journalists use paper.li? If used properly, could paper.li become the new Patch? With this sort of freedom, what will people report?
hat is a question that I get a lot. Frequently it is not even a question. People will say something along the lines of, “Wow, you guys must really be reeling from all the business you’re losing to the internet.” Sometimes they’ll just say, “Wow, sorry you’re in the newspaper business.” I usually just look at them, smile a bit and then explain that yes, the large daily newspapers are in trouble, but the medium and small-sized community newspapers, in most cases, are not only doing well, but may have a very bright future. Often they will be skeptical, but it’s true all the same.
Come September when changes at The Times-Picayune take effect, not only will New Orleans become the largest city without a daily newspaper, its residents will likely become some of the most disconnected in the country.
New Orleans lags behind the rest of the U.S. when it comes to broadband Internet service connections, according to an investigative report produced by the nonprofit journalism organization The Lens in conjunction with the Center for Public Integrity and the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University. About half of Louisianans subscribe to broadband services while the national average is 60 percent. Those who do subscribe to broadband Internet service tend to be white and in higher income brackets, the report shows.
As it has for many journalists, my job has drastically changed in the past five years. I used to only write articles and columns, to which editors added head-lines and then placed on a particular page in the print newspaper, which was delivered to people’s homes.
